Ontario (ON) is located in east-central Canada and is the most populous province and the second largest in total area. It is home to Canada's most populous city, Toronto, and the nation's capital, Ottawa. Ontario is one of the four provinces establishing the Dominion of Canada (British North America Act) on July 1, 1867.
Ontario is bordered by Manitoba on its west, Hudson Bay on its north, Quebec on its

east, and by three US states to its south, Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. The varied landscape includes the Canadian Shield, separating the fertile
farmland in the south and the grassy lowlands of the north. There are over
250,000 lakes in Ontario, making up about one-third of the world's fresh water. The great majority of Ontario's population and its arable land is located in the southern part of the province.
